The Idea of a Trip to Anywhere

Just saying the word, "trip" in my head puts me in a place of readiness, excitement and high alert! I wish there was another word besides "love" to describe how I feel about traveling.

Our family moved around a lot when I was growing up. I was born in Coffeyville, KS. (Is that the best name of a town or what? Second to traveling, I love coffee. It makes me happy!!) By the time I graduated from high school I had lived in 12 homes, 5 states, attended 4 elementary schools, 1 junior high school and 3 high schools. During those 18 years I was also privileged with opportunities to take 4 trips not associated with moving, visiting family or going to camp meeting!

The first trip was the only family vacation we ever took. We lived in Indiana and we went to Washington DC for a week. I was in 2nd grade. Love the memories! The other 3 trips were trips with our church youth group. Every two years our church held an International Youth Convention at a different city in the US. Those three trips were from Indiana to Denver, CO, Ohio to New Orleans, LA, and Va. Beach, VA to Seattle, WA. All were travels by car, but what adventures!

I grew up hearing about the travels of my dad before he and my mom got married. Before the doors of China were closed to the outside world, my dad was there. He was able to help some missionaries get out of the country when that was taking place. He had also traveled to India and Egypt prior to marriage and during the rest of his life journeyed to Brazil, Panama, Peru, Guatemala, and Ecuador. My mom had traveled to Haiti and Mexico.

My first airplane trip was leaving home to go to college, and when I buckled my seatbelt and felt myself sink into the seat at takeoff, I was forever hooked! That's when the idea of a trip to anywhere became a passion.

There came a time when I knew I would need a passport to take me

Beyond Our Walls.

Linda
